Deadly Crash Closes Major Highway in Whitby
SIU Investigating Circumstances of Wrong-Way Collision
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate a deadly wrong-way collision on Highway 401 in Whitby on Monday. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report that the crash occurred on Highway 401 in Whitby, Ontario, and involved multiple vehicles.
According to the OPP, the westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Whitby have reopened, but the eastbound lanes remain closed. The highway is currently impassable in both directions near Highway 412 due to the ongoing investigation.
The SIU says the crash happened just before 10 p.m. on Monday. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the highway before it collided head-on with another vehicle.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates incidents involving civilian deaths or serious injuries involving police officers or other specified individuals.
