Hor the Mountain
The Two Mountains
The Hebrew Bible mentions two distinct mountains named Hor Hōr hāHār.
Southern Hor
One of the mountains borders the land of Edom south of the Dead Sea, in the area midway between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea. This mountain is located on the eastern border of the long valley known as the Arabah.
Northern Hor
The other mountain is located on the border of the land of Edom, at the foot of which the Israelites encamped during their journey. According to the Romano-Jewish historian Titus Flavius Josephus (37-100 AD), this twin-peaked mountain is known as Jebel Nebi Harun, which means "Mountain of the Prophet Aaron."
The Tomb of Aaron
Jebel Nebi Harun features two peaks. The higher peak is crowned with a small, white-domed mausoleum known as the Tomb of Aaron. This mausoleum is considered one of the most sacred sites in Petra.
