3.5-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Ontario, California

No injuries reported after earthquake strikes near Metrolink tracks

Minor damage was reported in the area as crews continue to assess the situation

A 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck Ontario, California at 1:25 p.m. PT on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of the quake was located about 2 miles north of downtown Ontario, near Metrolink tracks.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, but minor damage was reported in the area. Some buildings in Ontario and neighboring cities experienced cracked walls and broken windows. Power outages were also reported in some areas.

Metrolink, which operates commuter trains in Southern California, suspended service on its San Bernardino line due to the earthquake. Crews are inspecting the tracks for damage.

The earthquake was felt across a wide area of Southern California, including Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego County. Residents as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada, reported feeling the quake.

The USGS has issued a "yellow" alert for the area, indicating that there is a moderate risk of aftershocks in the coming days. Residents are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and to take precautions, such as securing loose objects and having a plan in place in case of a larger earthquake.

The earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events that have struck Southern California in recent months. On July 5, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Ridgecrest, causing significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the same area on July 6, causing even more damage.

Southern California is located in a seismically active area and is prone to earthquakes. Residents are advised to be prepared for earthquakes by having an emergency plan in place and securing their homes and businesses.
