Cubs Win in Extras After Contreras' Ninth-Inning Home Run

Chicago Cubs Defeat Washington Nationals 7-6 in 10 Innings

The Chicago Cubs defeated the Washington Nationals 7-6 in 10 innings on Monday, September 19, 2024, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The Cubs won the game on a walk-off home run by catcher Willson Contreras in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The Nationals took an early lead in the game, scoring two runs in the first inning off of Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks. The Cubs came back to tie the game in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by Patrick Wisdom.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning, when the Nationals loaded the bases with one out. Cubs closer David Robertson came in and struck out the next two batters to end the inning and send the game to extra innings.

The Cubs scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on Contreras' solo home run off of Nationals reliever Tanner Rainey. The home run was Contreras' second of the game and his 25th of the season.

With the win, the Cubs improved to 75-67 on the season, while the Nationals fell to 55-87. The Cubs are now one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the third and final National League Wild Card spot.
